I am the CTO for CalFinder a contractor referral service like no other, and I'm very proud of that. I've been working in the construction area for only a short time and am finding that the people, whehter it be a homeowner, or contractor, are refreshingly genuine. Other than work, getting outside and fly fishing is the only way to go.
View all articles by Dean DowdFor the children of many remodelers, the perfect party house has a tap built into the refrigerator, a tower of beer cans on the mantelpiece, and a stage in the basement. But for the remodelers themselves, it would probably be a bit more refined. But, to be fair to college kids (and future remodelers), they do have a clear idea of what they want. This question of a remodeler's perfect party house is not often asked. Many people incorporate some real party favors, so to speak, without even realizing it. So, in the interest of breaking it down and spelling it out, how would you design the perfect party house?
Of course open spaces are essential in and out of the house. Party guests should have an easy time navigating from the food and spirits to the wide open living room and out to the patio. Several small groups trapped in several small rooms is a detriment to any party house.
But an open floor plan signifies horizontal and vertical space. The perfect party house would have high, possibly exposed-beam and vaulted ceilings. Not only do they give a sense of space in a crowded room but a high ceiling allows air to flow more freely. Air which might otherwise be stifled by a room full of party guests.
The kitchen will certainly be a high-traffic area in any good party house. So a galley kitchen is probably not a good idea for this one. No, an open kitchen plan with plenty of walking room is essential. A center island for food platters and drinks is great. Maybe even bar-height countertops adjacent to and looking out over the great room.
Now, any good party has frills, luxuries that don't typically get used every day and subsequently are not added into most home designs. But this is the perfect party house! So all inhibitions are out the window and it's time for party favors:
The patio is a hotspot for summer parties. So a swimming pool is number one. Add to that a patio bar, lots of seating, a dock complete with pontoon boat for the lakeside home (which the perfect party house would undoubtedly be), and whatever else each partying remodeler can think of.
Next it's on to the game room; a place to get away from even the thought of work. Of course the options are many for the game room: pool table, card table, dart board, ping-pong, multiple TVs wired with cable and several sports channels, and the list goes on and on.
Let us not forget landscaping. The sky is the limit for the perfect party house. A few valuable suggestions include stone paths, a variety of flower beds, or even taller bushes lining them. Remote nooks and crannies with benches and their own unique microscape would make a nice spot for breaks from the festivities or simple reflection.
This barrage of party favors could go on and on. But the fact is, there is no one perfect party house. Every perfect party house is different for each and every remodeler. That's why we go party at other people's houses as well as our own. Still, there is only one way to get started on the perfect party house; a free estimate from a local remodeling contractor.
