Wood-framed building deconstruction is a specific approach to remove materials for reuse in such a way as to preserve their integrity and value to the greatest extent possible and as economically as possible. Deconstruction is generally perceived as manual disassembly of a building, although various combinations of manual and mechanical methods are being studied to improve cost and time performance. Solid wood recovery rates of 50% to 90% are not uncommon. Deconstruction
emphasizes a hierarchy of material use; reuse first, then recycle. For example, it is deemed preferable to reuse a recovered timber beam in its whole form rather than grind it up and recycle it into mulch or boiler fuel.
